Byker Primary School

30th June 2023 A letter from Mr J Newton

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope my letter finds you and your children well.

As you will know, I have not been at school for some time now.  This has been due to the diagnosis of a neurological illness and unfortunately my condition is unlikely to improve.  This means that it would be incredibly difficult for me to return to my role as Headteacher and I have therefore made the decision to retire from education at the end of this term. This has been a very tough decision for me, as Byker Primary School has been a huge part of my life for the last thirteen years.

During my time at the school, the support that I have received from yourselves has made me feel very much a part of this special community. I was immensely proud to have been deputy head teacher when our school became outstanding and I was even prouder to become head teacher in 2019.

As head teacher, a focus on well-being and creating opportunities was always my main priority and I enjoyed leading the school’s Byker Family Fit, Mental Fitness Gym and Thrive programmes. The ‘wood’ area and Thrive room are lasting spaces which, alongside the edible playground, children at Byker Primary can hopefully enjoy for years to come.

Other memories I will particularly cherish will be our taking part in Fenwick window live in 2020 and visits from Olympians, footballers, Chief Constables and the CEO of Asda.  Taking pupils to France and High Borrans will always be very special occasions and I sincerely hope that the pupils will cherish all these memories too.

I hope that Byker Primary School continues to thrive long after I depart and that your children are at the very centre of learning experiences, as they always have been. They are very special.

I will really miss chatting with you all at the school gates and seeing your children grow, become successful and return to visit with news of their progress.

I wish you and your families all the very best for a happy and positive future.

With warm wishes,

Mr John Newton
