It is an exciting time for maths at Byker Primary School. Helping our children make sense of maths, apply it to the wider world and nurture a love of it is our ultimate goal.
Currently, we are on a mathematical road towards Mastery of maths. We know that to master anything, whether it be a speaking a foreign language or playing a musical instrument takes time, patience and resilience, which can be challenging in places. However, we have a united determination to achieve this.
This progression towards mastery starts as soon as children enter our school, and is consistently developed by building on previous practical experiences and knowledge.
The fundamental idea behind this vision is to support all pupils to be able to perform simpler tasks and over a period of time (during one lesson, over a block of work and as your child progresses through primary education) build upon their existing understanding through small coherent steps to move onto more challenging tasks. No child is left behind within their learning. Nothing is left to chance. Each step builds on prior knowledge, taking a child from basic fluency skills to being able to apply those skills to reasoning and problem solving, using a combination of practical experiences, investigations and time to talk and reflect.
