Book Fair Competition winners

A huge congratulations to Willow, Rosa, Tharun and Alana for winning the poster competition ahead of our Book Fair. They each have a £5.00 voucher to spend at the Book Fair and we can't wait to see the posters go up around school and the local community.

Am I too ill for school?

As we approach the winter season, it is common for children to pick up coughs, colds and other seasonal illnesses. We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to decide whether your child is well enough to attend school. The NHS has produced the helpful guide below to support parents in making these decisions and to provide advice on managing common childhood illnesses.

End of Term Attendance Prize

A huge congratulations goes to class 3.9 Mr Shields' class for having the Highest Attendance of 96.7% for this Autumn Half term. To celebrate, they won a large tub of jelly spiders and an extra spooky fun session as a reward.

Each half term the class with the highest attendance will win a prize and celebration reward.

Boo-ker Halloween Disco

Such amazing costumes made it to our Boo-ker Halloween Disco last night. We raised over £300 to put towards trips and experiences for our children, so thank you to all of our parents who purchased tickets and tuck. It was great to see the children celebrating an end to a long half term, dancing and singing to DJ Thackers tunes.

North East Autism Society

Come along to learn more about the support they can offer, find out about free toddler sessions, in-person sessions and explore a selection of sensory resources. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

Recycling week

Parents Evening Autumn Term

Dental Bus St Vincents Centre

The Dental Bus will be in Newcastle, at St Vincent's Centre on the following dates:

From Dentaid they have shared that they: We provide fillings, extractions, oral cancer checks, oral health instruction and scale and polish treatments. We are also able to prescribe antibiotics for infections and pain relief.We are unable to provide orthodontics (including braces, retainers and clear aligners), implants,dentures or root canals as our focus is on urgent, pain-relieving care and promoting good oral health.If a patient requires more advanced treatment or general anaesthetic a referral will be made to the nearest hospital.

Pop up Community Event

We want to say a huge thank you to all of the services and parents that took part in our Community Pop Up Event yesterday at school. We hope you all took away supportive information, and found other resources for yourselves and your children to access. 35 adults were entered into the prize draw for visiting every stall. The draw has been pulled and 2 parents have been selected to collect their £40 Amazon voucher tomorrow. We will be calling them today. After half term holidays, we will be sending our a parent voice to see if this is something you would like more of throughout the year.

Recycle for Newcastle Competition

Please support Byker Primary School in the Small Electrical Recycling Competition. We have installed our recycling bin in the main school yard at the front of school and are taking in any donations of broken or unwanted small electrical appliances.

E-Bikes and E-Scooters

Do you know the law around E-bikes and Scooters? Before you buy them for your children for Christmas, please read through the leaflet to further understand the law to make them road legal. We have been sharing this with children during assembly so they too understand the law.

Halloween Disco

Design Technology-Main Meal

Crazy Hair Day

As part of our PSHE curriculum and understanding what it means to give back, volunteer and help others, the whole school took part in crazy hair day to support a pupil cutting her hair to raise money for Princess Trust Charity. We are all so proud of her bravery to support others in need. A total of £185.00 was raised and donated to the trust.

As part of Geography, Year 2 went to explore the surrounding area. They went to Ouseburn Valley where they stopped off at local areas of interest. The Farm and Seven Stories, before walking back alongside the River Tyne.

Allergy Training

All staff and children at Byker have completed their allergy training. We have installed our Kitt Medical Anaphylaxis kitt and we have all had training on what an Anaphylaxis reaction is.

World Book Night

Thank you to all of the parents who stayed behind after-school and attended our first World Book Night as supported by Literacy Trust. It was lovely to see so many families reading with their children, completing book-themed crafts and joining in the book swap event.

Parents and children have asked if this is something we will be doing again, and yes this is. We will continue to keep you updated for an end of year event.

Easter Raffle

We want to say a huge thank you to all that purchased Easter Raffle Tickets this week. We were able to raise just over £400 which will be put back into a summer fun session for the children to across school. The school council will speak to each class and look at what summer fun activities they may like to do.

Local Fire Engine Visist

Year 2 had a fantastic visit from our local fire engine yesterday! The experience linked to our History learning on the Great Fire of London, as the children explored how firefighting has changed since 1666. They loved comparing past and present and had great fun trying out the equipment!

We made a 3 course tasting meal as part of our Food Technology sessions. For mains we made creamy salmon pasta and honey and soy salmon parcels. The children scored the meals highly and enjoying tasting them.

We had the opportunity to complete a nature visit and tour of Gibside. Our children looked for mini beasts, learnt about the trees and nature around them and got to place all of our learning about habitats into practice.

School Council plant Sycamore Gap Sapling

Our School Council recently had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Lighthouse Project youth club at St Michael’s Church, where something very special was taking place – the planting of a sapling grown from the original Sycamore Gap Tree.

Before the event, the children had been learning about the history and significance of the Sycamore Gap Tree, what happened to it, and how new hope has grown from the 39 saplings that were successfully produced from it. They then shared their learning with their peers, helping everyone understand why this tree has meant so much to so many people.

We were delighted that our local youth club was successful in their bid to receive one of these saplings. During the celebration, Bobby-Jay and Cara were chosen to help plant the young tree in the youth club grounds – a moment they will surely remember for years to come.

Meanwhile, Nadia and Harvey shared some beautiful poetry they had written, reflecting on hope, growth and the future of the tree. All of the children also created thoughtful posters, each including their wishes for the sapling as it grows.

The planting was marked with a lovely celebration attended by many members of the community and local stakeholders. It was a proud moment for our School Council to be part of such a meaningful event and to contribute to the story of this very special tree.

We look forward to watching the sapling grow and thrive for many years to come – a lasting symbol of hope, community and new beginnings.
