How we fulfil our duties
1. Eliminating Discrimination
We ensure that discrimination, harassment and prejudice are not tolerated in anyway.
- staff and governors are regularly trained on equality responsibiltiies
- Policies such as behaviour and anti-bullying reflect our commitments
- Incidents are addressed promptly and effectivly
2. Advancing Equality of Oppertunity
We actively remove barriers and support all pupils to achieve their potential. We do this by:
- Monitoring attainment, progress and participation across groups
- Providing targeted support for vulnerable learners
- Making reasonable adjustment for learners with additional needs
- Ensuring all pupils can access the full curriculum and wider opportunities beyond the school day
3. Fostering Good Relations
We promote respect, understanding and positive relationships across our school. This includes:
- A curriculum that reflects diverse cultures
- Assemblies and events that celebrate diversity
- Strong anti-bullying approaches
- Engagement with our local community and businesses
Equality in Practice
Equality is at the heart of everything we do at Byker Primary School. We consider the needs of all groups and our most vulnerable learners in Newcastle city when planning trips, residential, curriculum change provision and policies. Other areas we consider are as follows:
- Activities that are accessible to all pupils
- Religious observances are respected
- Facilities continue to be developed and equitable for all
- Support is in place where needed
The equality Act recognises that some schools may need to take additional steps to support some pupils, particularly those with disabilities, to ensure fairness and inclusion.
Equality objectives (2026-2030)
Objective 1: Reduce gaps in attainment and engagement
We aim to identify and reduce attainment and progress gaps for disadvantages and vulnerable learner, including those with SEND and from minority backgrounds
Objective 2: Strengthen Inclusive Practice
We continue to create high quality professional development for staff school wide, improving provision for all learners including those with SEND and discabilities to ensure they have access to the full and wider curriculum
Objective 3: Promote diversity and respect
We ensure that our curriculum and wider opportunities and experiences reflect and celebrate our diverse community and prepare pupils for life in modern Britain
Objective 4: Reduction of attendance barriers
We work in partnership with children, families and relevant professionals to identify and reduce barriers to attendance, rather than allowing disadvantage or individual circumstances to limit a child’s opportunities. Our approach is supportive, inclusive and responsive, with reasonable adjustments and targeted support provided where appropriate.
