Toilet Training

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and developing independence with toileting is an important part of helping children feel confident, comfortable and ready for their school day.

We recognise that every child develops at a different pace and that some children may require additional support because of their individual needs. School and families working together can make a significant difference in helping children develop positive and successful toileting routines.

Getting Ready for School

Where developmentally appropriate, we encourage parents and carers to support their child to become increasingly independent with toileting before starting school. This includes helping your child to:

  • Recognise when they need to use the toilet.
  • Tell an adult when they need to go.
  • Use the toilet independently.
  • Manage their own clothing, including pulling trousers, skirts and underwear up and down.
  • Wipe themselves as independently as possible.
  • Flush the toilet after use.
  • Wash and dry their hands thoroughly.
  • Become familiar with using toilets outside the home.

Accidents are a normal part of learning. Remaining calm, positive and reassuring will help your child develop confidence.

How Can I Help My Child?

Establishing a consistent routine can be very helpful. Encourage your child to use the toilet at regular points during the day, such as after waking, before leaving the house, after meals and before bedtime.

Choose clothing that your child can manage independently. Elasticated waistbands and simple fastenings can make a significant difference while children are developing their toileting skills.

Praise your child's effort and growing independence, rather than focusing only on whether they have been successful. Avoid punishment or showing disappointment following accidents.

It can also help to use the same simple language at home that your child will understand at school, such as toilet, wee, poo, wipe, flush and wash your hands.

When Your Child Starts School

Please let us know if your child is still developing their toileting skills when they start school. Open communication allows us to understand your child's needs and consider how they can best be supported.

If your child has a known medical condition, developmental need or SEND that affects their toileting, please speak to school so that appropriate arrangements and reasonable adjustments can be considered with you.

We understand that continence difficulties can be sensitive for children and families. Our priority is always to ensure that children are treated with dignity, respect and understanding.

Spare Clothing

For children who may have occasional accidents, parents may be asked to provide a clearly named bag containing appropriate spare clothing, including:

  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Trousers, leggings, skirt or other suitable bottoms
  • A spare top where appropriate

Please remember to replace any items that are used.

Please speak to a member of our Early Years team if you would like further advice or support with preparing your child for school.
